Is Invisalign® Right for You?
Many adults are interested in orthodontic treatment. However, they don’t like the idea of wearing metal appliances on their teeth for a year or two, particularly if they work in a professional environment.
Invisalign® might be an option if you find yourself in this situation. Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment system that uses a series of clear, medical grade plastic aligners to gently guide teeth into proper alignment over time. The aligners are virtually undetectable when worn.
Unlike conventional brackets and arch wires, which require a modified diet and special oral hygiene tools to clean around the appliances, Invisalign®’s removable aligners offer the freedom to eat any foods you like and to practice normal oral hygiene.
The aligners also can be removed for key moments, such as family photos or other special occasions. Just keep in mind that Invisalign® aligners can’t do their job when they aren’t worn, so you want to wear them as much as possible to achieve your desired result and to complete treatment on time.
Learning if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign® begins with a complimentary evaluation by the team here at Jennings Orthodontics. We will take X-rays and Dr. Carrie Jennings Southworth will conduct a comprehensive orthodontic exam.
Her findings from that exam are used to create a treatment plan. Once you’re ready to proceed with treatment, we will take photos and impressions of your teeth. These impressions are used by Invisalign® to create digital 3-D images of your teeth.
Dr. Jennings uses those images to create a precise treatment plan, including the exact movements of your teeth, and to determine approximately how long treatment will take.
Invisalign® technology makes it possible for Dr. Jennings to show you a virtual representation of how your teeth will move with each series of aligners, as well as what your smile will look like at the end of treatment.
You will receive several sets of aligners at each of your orthodontic checkups, which are about every six weeks. Each set of aligners is worn for one to two weeks, depending on your individual treatment plan, before graduating to the next in the series.
Treatment doesn’t end with your last set of aligners. You will receive a final set of retainers to wear once you have completed your series of aligners, or possibly a permanent retainer for your lower teeth.
The retention phase is crucial to maintaining the good results achieved by Invisalign®. You will wear them daily for a while, and eventually you will graduate to needing to wear them at night a few times per week. Wearing retainers regularly will help keep your teeth from relapsing.
